Well, I Guess that Solves THAT Mystery



(The relation to Jewish history here is rather macabre, but still...)

Right after V-E day, there was a lot of speculation in the press about where Adolf Hitler was, and whether he was alive or dead. The above picture--from an article about the solver Wilhelm Steinitz (not to be confused with the world chess champion of the same name)--seems to suggest a rather different possibility than the official histories do. The picture was posted by Edward Winter on his amazing chess history web site, "Chess Notes" (google it!).

I suppose Hitler, a.k.a. Steinitz, figured that "hiding in plain sight" is best. Nobody would ever look for him in England, would they? It would also explain why, as the article says, the alleged Mr. Steinitz "only took to problems in 1946" and owns "a giant hound named 'Konig'".

(And no, I'm not serious. Why do you ask?)
